All I Need is a $100 million Shelter

Private lake, seclusion yet near amenities, no state income tax - who could ask for more? And who would dare ask more than the current $100 million price tag?

What Price Tranquility? $100 Million - Forbes.com

In total, the estate has nine bedrooms (five in the main house), 14 full baths, five half baths, a 19-seat movie theater and garage space for 16 cars. Much of the property has been left natural, with walking paths curving through the acres. The grounds also include two par-3 golf holes, one with a 3,500-square-foot green. There is a state of the art golf simulator, an art studio with ceramic firing room, guest house, stable and gym with NBA backboards and scoreboards. The house comes complete with antique and reproduction furniture, works of art and soft furnishings–including, believe it or not, basketball uniforms.

“I really think we will get it,” Chase says of the $100 million asking price. “I really do.”

2006 Jaguar XJ: Just Like An Old Airliner - Gizmodo

We think changing the DVD at high speed will become the next extreme sport.

2006 Jaguar XJ: Just Like An Old Airliner - Gizmodo

What they liked: The engine puts out 400hp, which is a lot considering the car is completely aluminum and quite light for a large sedan at 4,001 pounds. Overall, the car performs well and rides comfortably - like a first class airliner.

What they didn’t like: The car lacks simple luxuries like bi-xenon headlamps (we don’t mind because those things freakin’ blind us). And the entire design feels a dated, complete with a nav system from 1999.

Gizmodo thoughts: Bluetooth phone support is a step in the right direction and the front seats have screens in the back of their headrests. But to change a DVD, the player is in the trunk. In a boat like a Jag engineers can’t fit a player in the rear console? None of this tech is that expensive anymore - so in a $90,000 car the layout should be perfect.

For the Environmentally Conscious Drug Smuggler

Earthrace Boat: Carbon Trimaran Stabs Through Waves, Video - Gizmodo

The Earthrace boat isn’t some Greenpeace sponsored, treehugging tug. No! It’s a treehugging, carbon/Kevlar-hulled, 1080-Horsepower, 78 foot speedboat with a sharp bow meant to harpoon waves. Apparently, submarining through the crests of waves is a lot more efficient than going up and over them. And, as Wired reported, the boat ran a section of its circumnavigation off biofuel processed from the captain’s ass fat. Really.

Haute High-Tech Homes - Forbes.com

Who said Big Brother was creepy? There’s nothing like getting your groove on when a female voice chimes in to tell you your mother is calling.

Haute High-Tech Homes - Forbes.com

When mortgage broker Doug Burton arrives at his sleek Hollywood home, the house knows exactly what to do.

A small laser beam lets Burton know when he’s pulled his car far enough into the garage, and a light indicates whether the alarm system has been tripped since he left. As he enters the house, which appeared in the Steve Martin film Shopgirl, lights automatically switch on along his path, from the kitchen, to the hallway, to the master bedroom, and all the way to the closet, where he heads to change his clothes.

He doesn’t need stop to fiddle with the stereo system on the way; his favorite music automatically begins to play. And if the phone rings, the music automatically mutes so a female voice can say, if appropriate, “Your mother is calling from her cellphone.”

Five Different Colors - One For Each Workday

That’s what every self-respecting hedge fund manager should own.

A Film-Worthy Ferrari - Forbes.com

Ferrari’s new P4/5 is a one-off, customized supercar that looks like the Batmobile–or some other futuristic, million-dollar vehicle you would see in a movie. This is appropriate, considering it was built for James Glickenhaus, the American director of such action movies as McBain (1991, starring Christopher Walken) and The Protector (1985, starring Jackie Chan). The P4/5 is the work of Italian design house Pininfarina, a longtime Ferrari partner. The car uses the mechanical underpinnings of Ferrari’s out-of-production 2002 Enzo Ferrari supercar, and gives the Enzo a body and interior customized to Glickenhaus’ specifications. No price is available for the P4/5, but each of the 400 Enzos Ferrari built costs $650,000.

RIM BlackBerry 7130c

For some reason Laptop Magazine thinks the keyboards for smartphones aren’t cramped enough already and proposes making you be a contortionist to type on the damn things. They give this product four stars for reasons that elude us.

LAPTOP Magazine • RIM BlackBerry 7130c

At 4.2 ounces, the 7130c barely sags a shirt pocket, and it’s roughly the same width and height as a Palm Treo 700w. Like other BlackBerrys in the 7100 series, the 7130c features SureType technology, which fits a QWERTY keyboard onto only 20 keys with few trade-offs in terms of ease of use. That design makes the phone slimmer. The Talk and End keys, as well as Bluetooth functionality and a loud speakerphone, make the 7130c as practical for talking as it is for messaging.

Palm Treo 700wx

Laptop Magazine reviews this palm-top and gives it high marks.

LAPTOP Magazine • Palm Treo 700wx

The Palm Treo 700wx gives Sprint users a Windows Mobile version of the fabled Treo platform. It also comes with a few significant improvements over the 700w for Verizon, such as a much-needed upgrade to 64MB of RAM (up from the 700w’s 32MB), and the ability to use the 700wx as a laptop modem at fast EV-DO speeds (typically around 400 Kbps, almost as good as a DSL connection). Unfortunately, some of the same issues that plagued the 700w are still in play here.

Like all Treos, the 700wx is fairly large and weighs a hefty 6.4 ounces. It still sports an external antenna, though we hope to see that disappear in future versions. The 700wx’s QWERTY keyboard is easy to type on. When you combine it with the stylus and simple five-way navigator control, making calls and running applications is a pleasure.
